A Conversation about the Riverman, 1984

In 1982, a serial killer started targeting sex workers and young women in Washington State. As dead bodies were being discovered near the Green River, the King County sheriff's detectives began spending more and more time investigating the Green River killings and realizing that they didn't have leads to follow. As a result, the Green River task force was formed, which included Dave Reichert, Robert Keppel, and other detectives.

In 1984, Ted Bundy wrote a letter to the Green River Task Force offering his help to detectives in catching the then-unknown perpetrator the “Green River Killer” (or the “Riverman”), whose identity would later be revealed - through DNA evidence - as Gary Ridgway.

The task force accepted Bundy’s offer to be a consultant for the Green River case. On November 17, 1984, Dave Reichert and Robert Keppel flew to Florida to visit Bundy and they returned the second day, and they taped their conversations with Bundy.

Long after Bundy was executed, Ridgway was apprehended and convicted of killing between 1982 and 1998 (he was the most prolific serial killer in the United States).

Last year I contacted the King County Sheriff’s Office (via email at sheriff@kingcounty.gov), requesting copies of the audio tapes regarding Bundy’s work as a consultant for the King County Sheriff on the Gary Ridgway case. A few days ago an archivist at KCSO answered me saying they located the records I wanted and gave them to me for free, and I am now sharing them on my Internet Archive channel:

A micro-niche Patreon “creator” has also been selling these tapes on Patreon. The micro-niche Patreon “creator” started trickling them down some time last summer, and a few days ago got to sharing the seventh tape. It might take some time to trickle down all 16 tapes of Bundy’s November 17 and 18, 1984 conversations with Keppel and Reichert on Patreon, whereas I am sharing them all on my Internet Archive channel for free.

The micro-niche Patreon “creator” promises to give their Patreon supporters first dibs to the rarest Bundy-related materials out there. Both the micro-niche Patreon “creator” and I are sharing rare materials, but only the micro-niche Patreon “creator” is digitally panhandling for subsidies

I also shared the full correspondence between Bundy and Keppel, including Bundy’s first, long handwritten letter to the Green River Task Force:
